~Caught Christenberry's show on its last day at UVA; next stop American U's Katzen Center. Went out to eat with my big sister at an overpriced restaurant before crashing at her house. Spent much of Monday with my brother before crashing at his place with a big Chimay Cinq Cents & a Rochefort 10 to aid in enjoying The Bourne Ultimatum. Forgot about wine & cheese on Christmas Eve... so I had some on Christmas before we ate. An odd Christmas. Bought a bunch of Fabriano paper, so bookmaking may continue in my free time. Hanging out with Little, who is a very cool cat. Lunched at Raku with Rafal. Awaiting the new year with bated breath.

~What an (insert superlative here) ______ week. Four days off, then a good day in the trees at Airlie, a lot of art installed for a few gallery clients, dinner with a delightful girl, a bunch-o-fun with Rafal (his birthday party last night traveled: Stetson's, L'Enfant, Bar Pilar, concluding with dancing at St. Ex), just a really good week full of giant ecstatic grins. Oh, did I mention a wonderful young woman?
~Taking a friend to the airport tomorrow on my way home for a couple of days. Gonna hang out with her awesome cat, Dr. Little, for a few days when I get back. A couple of tree days coming up on the horizon. Then a full-speed return to the gallery! Good stuff.
~Looking forward to January. The days become noticeably longer, the cold snaps down, the start of my third decade creeps closer, & it'll be time for running to pick up again.
~Better go work on my Christmas '07 edition of books... might actually finish a couple before the day arrives! Running low on my Italian paper. Need to get a bunch of Fabriano soon, also some leather & book cloth (+ a workspace!)
~Happy Holidays to those who celebrate them! Whoo!

~Tu/W I worked with Lyt between Marshall & Middleburg. Awesome. I cannot describe the manic highs that working outdoors produces in me. The land of Mosby's Rangers, one of my childhood heroes (he grew up near where I grew up; he shot a fellow UVA student--imagine the news frenzy that would incur today). Dunno if I'd ever been above I-66 in that part of the Commonwealth before. Hope to go shooting pitchers out there. Drove back through the Manassas National Battlefield Park. So much blood shed in Virginia during that war.
~Monday afternoon my friend Joe showed me around his stomping grounds in NE, his 'hood; it was a really fun day off, made me wish I had a nice digi-SLR to get instant feedback on all those mental pix I made... an intensely photogenic area, with character.
~Forgot to get a Christmas tree while I was out there. Damn it.
~Must hit the Bayly before the 23rd to catch Bill Christenberry's show.
~Drank a lot of wine & beer last night (slowly--6pm-2am) & really didn't feel like waking up for work; was a lovely dark, damp day to spend in bed with a bunch of hot cookies & some good books (or a yummy girl ;).
~Sally Mann called me last week.
~Met up with Chris & Rachel in the 'burbs for a terribly boring opening at the Arlington Arts Center. Was a good reminder of why I live in the city... the monoculture of blandness across the river was very depressing. Here in my 'hood we've got shootings within walking distance, people of all races, cops racing by, bikes, cars, trucks, streetsweepers (even Tec-9s), dogs, cats, birds, trees, bums, drunks, bar-goers, workers of all sorts, androgynous couples, same-sex couples, heteros, babies, old folks, natives, transients, college education, high school education, no education, politicos (the Governor of Montana was in my bar last week, he shook my hand, & he tipped the doorman $100), jerks, nice folks, crazies (hi!), & so forth & so on.
~Really looking forward to our January show: Joe Mills & John Alexander. Alexander has a retrospective exhibit at the Smithsonian's American Art Museum opening next week on the 21st. Joe's work is crazy--I love it. The few Alexander pieces I've seen look crazy & awesome too. This show should kick ass.
-Well fed & feeling very elegant indeed, Babar went to the tailor.

~Tree days canceled due to illness & inclement weather = bah.
~Furnace not being repaired until Friday = brrr.
~Roughing it Demon House style = priceless.
~Fieldtrip to Tryst with roommates for lunch & hot chocolate = fun.
~Spending the week under covers, wearing polypro & many layers of fleece = why am I spending my third winter here? (Coz of the awesome people with whom I live! Duh!)
~The Coen Bros. No Country For Old Men is great. It kicks ass. Nary a gratuitous or unnecessary scene to be seen. Eloquently succinct, never brusque, beautifully edited & shot = see it.
~Shot a handful of film (!) pix the last couple of days (black & white), the first I've made in well over half a year. Ooooh... mebbe creativity rears its head from lapping at alcohol!
~Got some new sheets... ahh. Gonna go nestle in them now.

Monday, December 03, 2007

~Still no new laptop. Mebbe in January I'll find $3K to blow.
~Wind! Supposed to do tree work the next two days but with all this wind & the forecast calling for snow, guess I'll play it by ear.
~Furnace is on the fritz; supposed to be repaired Tuesday.
~Groceries in VA with Rafal... lots of fun & money.
~Finally got my Mamiya 7II back! Time to shoot film again.
~Keep losing track of time & not seeing the Coen Bros. new film.
~My friend has turned me on to The Clash this fall. I never realized how many of their songs I knew. Been buying CDs since my laptop died: Go! Team, Brazilian Girls, two Clash discs, two M.I.A. discs, Aimee Mann, Erin McKeown, & The Soul Savers.
~The Soul Savers' Black Cat show was good, if sparsely attended, Thursday night. Was happy to run into Hatnim. Saw Sam Holden looking out for his pal Mark Lanegan. Met a nice couple at the bar, Matt and Becca, he's a professor at Frostburg State, she's an arts writer trying to break into the DC scene.
~Too many 6-day weeks with more than one span of double-digit consecutive days worked proved too much for me, when factoring in my proclivity for not sleeping so I may stay up to hang out with my bartender friend, or just to close out bars, so I'm not working in the kitchen at Rafal's any more.
~Rah rah rah.
~Am so fucking completely through with being the EAR for just about everyone I know to complain to, moan & groan, feel sorry for themselves, voice their doubts, ask my opinion on where they should steer their lives... I am clearly a fucked up individual with little helpful to share, & I don't want or need any of your misery. So, if you don't have anything pleasant, nice & cheery, positive, hopeful, proactive, &/or inertia-denying to share with me via the phone or in person... leave me alone. Other than this stupid blog I by & large keep my shit to myself.
~Added up some receipts I've kept since late July from my neighborhood bar... over $1300... which isn't as much as I've spent, just the receipts I've kept.
~Hung out with Andrew Mokey, & Ben Ferry too, a couple of nights last week.
~Called my friend awful names while wasted a couple of Saturdays ago. I've done some stupid stuff this year, but that's got to be tied for first with a couple of other monumentally effed-up things to do. Earlier that night we may have walked out of a downtown bar with four beer glasses in our coat pockets.
~I need people who are creative, live in walking distance or short Metro rides away, want to make music, movies, books & photos, can drink without getting wasted or angry, have warm houses wherein I am welcome to crash during the upcoming cold winter, & who aren't artworld game players. Drinking is becoming boring.
~Had a remarkably lovely Thanksgiving at Alissa & Jeff's in Alexandria: good food, good friends, awesome puppy, played Yahtzee for the first time in years, drank a lot of good wine & was driven to Metro by a sober & nice neighbor. Got home & had a beer with Rafal before heading up the hill to another friend's apartment, where I joined her, her funny mom & her awesome sister, in playing a really fun game called Pit, drinking lots of wine & champagne, & staying up listening to music until 7am. A truly delightful day with delicious food at both homes.

Wednesday, November 14, 2007

~My poor old laptop has given up the ghost, gone kaput, died. I think. I went to sleep Monday night listening to music from my iTunes & when the playlist ended the laptop went to sleep. I got up a few hours later to get ready for a couple of days with Lyt, woke the still slumbering giant & found it very slow in responding to any input or commands, so I tried to force-quit the programs that were running & re-launch Finder, but it took forever, so I tried to log out, but that took forever too, so I manually shut it down by holding the power button. When I restarted it never progressed from the gray screen to the blue screen, so I shut it down again. Subsequent restarts end at a gray screen with an OS9-style folder icon in the center that contains a flashing question mark & a smiling (mocking perhaps ;) Finder face.
~I am bummed.
~I'm hoping my Camry is going to be okay... 1) glasses, 2) laptop, 3)?
~So, enormously large readership (diet, please) of mine, I think I'll take a hiatus of undetermined duration from updating my silly blog. Of course I can update without my laptop, & mebbe I will, but mebbe it'll be better to live life without it for a bit, or forever.
~So don't send me email if you're trying to reach me in a timely manner... call my cell instead. If you don't know it, ask someone who does, or holler at me when you see me, or just holler out the window. Or try pissing in the wind.
~If you know someone with a new or very recent top-notch MacBook Pro (15" or 17") who wants to get rid of it for free/cheap/reasonable $, please let me know.
~Monday night, with a friend, saw the Joe Strummer documentary, The Future Is Unwritten, directed by Julien Temple.
~May go see David Kilgour tonight at DC9.
~Autumn in the country is beautiful... one must experience it firsthand.
~The End.

Saturday, November 10, 2007

~Right after I pulled on my sweatshirt & prepared to leave work Friday evening, standing right outside my gallery workroom: "POP!," my glasses finally broke--couldn't handle the stress anymore. So I walked home blind in the rainy, cold, dark rush-hour. Metro to Pentagon City... didn't like the selection of frames out there, so decided to miss kitchen work today (first Saturday off in a long time!) to get an eye exam & order some frames & contacts. Whoo. Did it downtown at a place recommended by Mary. Two right-eye contacts until my new gear arrives.
~Appreciated the funereal installation at my watering hole.
~Mr. Obvious says, "Parking."

~Scary face.
~Saturday morning walk home hilltop view.
~Laundry room wall detail.

Wednesday, November 07, 2007

~Wednesday AM: worked today with an even better view than this.
~Tuesday PM: self-p. time--peruse the shell instead of my rusty cogs.
~Tuesday AM: giant con-trail clouds over I-66.
~Monday PM: worked the kitchen solo for the 1st time during Adrian's fundraising event to allow him to finish producing his documentary.

Monday, November 05, 2007

~Wandered around the city Sunday trying to spend money. Had fun & didn't even wind up spending much: chocolate at Mozart's, a black sweatshirt ("...I wear black, nothing but black, coz goddamn it's a brand new payback, fuck Pat Sajak..." *so said Ice Cube in a 2Pac song from eons ago).
~I wish I didn't get crazy, obsessed, & ultimately pissed off when a female gives me attention & then doesn't respond. Screw that, the ones I've hung out with have been as crazy as me anyway. Nice, but crazy. I'm fucking retarded, always burning bridges. Better to be busy working & making money. Time to save $$$$ & avoid bars. Bunch of movies out or coming out that I really want to see, so I'm agonna try to see them instead of tipping away my $$$ for the next couple of weeks, particularly since I'm gonna be busy as hell for November, with scarcely a day off between my three jobs. Sheeeit.
~Way too soon to be wintertime pissed off.
~Kitchen tonight, 2 Lyt, 2 HFA, kitchen, Sunday off, kitchen, 2 Lyt, possible day off, 2-4 HFA, 1-2 Lyt somewhere in there, Thanksgiving mebbe with Alissa & Jeff, more craziness afterwards = lots of income to shuttle thru my accounts towards entities lusting after my $$$$.

Sunday, November 04, 2007

~EB & her friend Lisa hit the openings with me before (understandably) bouncing quickly for dinner. Had a good time chatting with people. Occasionally I wander around openings bored. Hung out w/ Mary watching people avoid banging into $20,000 chair sculptures--close calls with wine glasses extended over art. Got hooked up (thanks to Casey) with a ride to James' after-party at Comet, where we snacked on pizza & beer before snagging a ride to MtP with Frank Day. Wandered home, exchanging "WHOOOOO!z" with Jenn & Jeremy as they biked by. Was delicious to go to bed early--prolly only occurred a few times over the past handful of months. Caught up on much-needed sleep.

Saturday, November 03, 2007

~Misrach color.
~Two days off! If you've been phoning & getting no response... mebbe I'll call back someday. Not a lot to talk about. Work & beer.
~Holy crap I need new glasses. My lenses are probably five years old & long ago the "scratch-proof" finish proved itself unworthy of that designation. But they're ridiculously scratched now... like I was trying to frost them when cleaning my sweat off. Running, tree climbing... it all adds up to a mess. So I need Lasik &/or new frames, lenses, contacts... blah blah blah. Gotta find an eye doctor up here.

Friday, November 02, 2007

~Spent last night at my two bars.
~Woke up a touch late, my brutha from anutha mutha fixed me breakfast & I walked to work a little hungover with a travel mug of coffee to warm my hands in the morning cold. Had my day well planned & accomplished everything I intended. The gallery was sparkling when I left, too tired to stick around for the private preview reception. Met David Byrne. Was a good day to close out a very full gallery week.
~Hemphill's public opening takes place Saturday from 6-8pm featuring James Huckenpahler in Galleries 1 & 2, & David Byrne in Galleries 3 & 4. Other 1515 14th St galleries are opening too. Maybe I'll see you there.

Wednesday, October 31, 2007

~Didn't sleep last night. Aww hell.
~Bar stuff & morning.

Tuesday, October 30, 2007

~DC. Weekly. Weakly. Kamrafone. Duh.
~Another 10.5 hour gallery day.
~Mustering energy for Go! Team's 11pm set.

Monday, October 29, 2007

~Yes, I finished the Marine Corps Marathon. Yes, it was awesome. Yes, it really hurt after the first half. Yes, my legs were knots of cramps from mile 17 on. Yes, I walked a whole hell of a lot. Yes, it was a gorgeous day for a run. Yes, my one-lunged Polish brother Rafal whooped my ass by nearly half an hour. Yes, when I run my next marathon I will probably train for it. Yes, I'll probably cut out alcohol for at least a few days ahead of the next one. But beer the night before a marathon tastes better than usual.
~Anyway, here are my results.
~Went to an amazing Halloween party last night after I finished a gift for the hostess with the mostest: the biggest Coptic bound book I've ever made.
~Stayed a few hours late at work trying to get the painting done today, but G3 will need a 3rd coat of Super White in the morning, & then I've got to do the baseboards in two galleries.
~Oh, by the way... WHOOOOOOOO!

Saturday, October 27, 2007

~Left work a little early & the light was so fucking yummy outside (a lot like April) I almost pissed in my pants.
~Check out the piano key shadows on the bottom course of bricks.
~Pasta time. Then figure out marathon stuff, when to get up, what color lipstick to wear... then finish constructing my big book.

Friday, October 26, 2007

~I was in a horrid mood for most of the week as I chased my tail since I had too much free time due to not working. Sheesh. So, even for Rafal's nameday party, I was in partypooper mode. Shot a few digipix before napping for a few hours & then internally debated back & forth the merits of visiting my bar while in such a crappy mood. I eventually went to bed again, finally going to sleep by 4am. Was so effing bored this week! Wow.
~Max tagged along when Rafal & I picked up our Marathon raceday packets at the Armory Thursday afternoon. Ready for Sunday pain.
~I rearranged, organized, & made functional again the bookshelf I inherited from Behnam when he moved to Berkeley last summer.
~Made most of a big scrapbook last night. Not how I envisioned it, but I didn't have the appropriate paper, so it'll have to do, & if the person for whom it is destined sticks around, then I'll make a better one. It's not bad, just not perfect.
~Didn't make it to UVA for WAC's opening... bummed. Now I'm tired & it's too rainy to drive to Lyt's band's gig in Culpeper & then hit his Blue Moon Crew Work Weekend gathering back at his house.
~The 1515 ARTS BLDG is so damn leaky. Rain is nice.
~Enjoyed talking with Mr. C. Walker last night at Raf's.
~When I get time to hit the post office I'm sending a care package to our favorite misadventurer currently lost in the Great North Woods.
~Wanna see The Go! Team's 10pm Tuesday show at 9:30 Club?

Tuesday, October 23, 2007

~Went on my first lengthy run in a while today. Walked to Embassy Row, ran Mass Ave to the gravel trail through the woods by the Italian Embassy, hit the paved Rock Creek trail at the footbridge, meandered on down to the Lincoln Monument, ran by the reflecting pool, 2nd WW Memorial, & Washington Monument to the Mall, did a lap & walked home. Haven't had good rhythm in a while because I haven't been running significant distances. Eventually found it today. Only a handful of days remain until Raf & I run (or at least begin... hehehe) the Marine Corps Marathon.
~Got stupid drunk & had bad experiences Saturday & Sunday. Moderation required. My inner judge lambasted me. Correctly.
~Thinking I'm supposed to be single. Life seems to have a point for me that I'm missing. (I know I'm retarded, so that's not it.)
~Tomorrow's my little sister Margaret's 28th birthday.
~Tomorrow's Rafal's nameday.
~Finally gave Pro Photo the go-ahead to fix my Mamiya.
~Airlie with Lyt tomorrow. *Rain canceled.
~Saturday's the last day of Renee Stout's Hemphill show.

Sunday, October 21, 2007

~MuteMath was great, but I forgot how short the stage is at Satellite Ballroom. Still... had a pretty damn good time with Raf & Elizabeth. Drank good beer (Rochefort 10, a 75cl Chimay Red, a pumpkin ale, & some Dos Equis) but sweat out most of it jumping around in the humidity produced by the sold out crowd.

~more vids...///>>>
1: VA: raced up 250 while Dim kept the beat.
2: Cortona: puked in the sink while the illustrious C.P. Webb reclined at an angle unsuitable for recording the "action"; caution: rampant unintelligible slurred mumbling.
3: DC: walked home on Church St between 14th & 15th.
~more later...

~Nod to the past, & Mike...
1: in a January snowstorm Jabari came to town to participate in a reading at Meat Market Gallery, Mike & I hosted & entertained him at Demon House.
2: at a June Nat's game, Mike's inner rhythm came out.
3: before the game we spotted Crawford biking home from Archival Art Services, so Mike jumped him.
4: October '06, outside of Goldie's Italian, & Swing's (of course), a seriously hungover Mike did not puke for his amused audience--despite the plethora of cameras trained on him.
5: a July '06 outing on 14th with (rockstar shades) Mike & AJ.

video video video video video
~A lazy (semi-productive) Thursday off concluded as many days do 'round deez parts: drinking beer with Raf--Couba even came out!
~Screw the Red Sox Nation.
~Joe's so quick he's like a ghost.
~To bed at 2, up at 6 to run in ye olde cloudy dark of morn that sometimes brings to mind, hearkens back if ye will, the good olde days in the olde country (the one of olde, yore, & lore).

Thursday, October 18, 2007

~also... The 20th Annual Virginia Film Festival runs November 1-4 in Charlottesville. Schedule doesn't show a lot of films I want to see, but Sidney Lumet's new one, Before the Devil Knows You're Dead, looks pretty solid, with a damn good cast.
~Screw color-balancing. Did I mention I hate Photoshop?
~Spent a night at home for the first time in a while. It's fun to see how cluttered it gets between visits. Also frightening since the difference can be a measure of mental illness. She's not that crazy--she just likes stuff, lots of it's cool stuff, plus now that it's just the old fogies at home there's room for junk to sprawl. I love my old momma. :) Even if I don't much like talking to her anymore. I spent the first 24 years of my life living at home. Forgive me if my method of removing myself from my family's grasp, creating room for growth in my life, is like clearing space around a tree to allow it to catch sunlight to leap through the understory into the upper canopy of big trees. Coz, goddammit, I'm a big fucking tree. Hear my bark? (Hunh?)
~Finally got my '06 taxes done with my dad's CPA--byebye savings!
~Travel-time coming up: C'ville Saturday for MuteMath; C'ville next Friday for Christenberry's UVA opening; plus tree work next week.

Monday, October 15, 2007

~: I should be asleep, but I'm silly, giddy, & happy.
*: My life is weird.
!: Feels like I'm getting a cold.
#: Off to VA for 2-3 days.
(Every time I've been to Target has been with a girl.)

Sunday, October 14, 2007

~The gallery hosted a special event Thursday night put on by Peace X Piece. After the floors were covered with gorgeous handmade rugs, & intricately detailed tablecloths were hanging from the walls, 35-45 well-heeled women & men, many with firsthand knowledge of, & experience in, Afghanistan arrived for a cozy salon-style discussion, brainstorming session, & fundraiser for PXP. We were all fed a deliciously delightful dinner of Afghan food, followed by a dessert of tea & pudding. I went home stuffed, happy, & sleepy. PXP was founded by Patricia Smith Melton, who is married to Bill Melton, the founder of VeriFone, together they run The Melton Foundation. It was an interesting evening.
~I got home after 10pm, & despite having been awake for around 40 hours, decided to grab a beer from Rafal. That turned into a late-night trip... closed out my neighborhood bar & didn't go to sleep until a little after 3am. Was tired! My god.
~Friday was a boring gallery day.
~Spent Saturday working in the kitchen & never had a chance to sit down it was so busy. Jorge is so cool. I wish I spoke Spanish.
~Slept last night & feel lots better. Three days off this week! Whooo! Gonna have fun & get stuff done. Making money. Time to spend it.
~The cool Afghan dude who brought many of the rugs & was a coordinator for the gallery event told me about The Helmand, an Afghan restaurant in Baltimore that's even better than The Afghan Restaurant on Rte. 1 in Alexandria. So I'm thinking about heading there someday soon.

Wednesday, October 10, 2007

~I hate Photoshop. Can't use that shit. Blah.
~In honor of Mike's collages: More days with Lyt.

Sunday, October 07, 2007

Wandered around the Mall with my buddy Alissa today. Holiday weekend = packed museums. Good fun. Worked yesterday otherwise would've wandered around a bit with my dad & older sister when they came up for some art too. Hit the Turner exhibit at NGA on Monday with another friend. That is all.

Wednesday, October 03, 2007

~October. More than enough sun to add to my farmer's tan. Scenery to rival anywhere. Good trees to climb. Oh, Virginia.
~Monday was fabulous. Up super early, ran early, lots of Demon coffee. After that the day only got better! Very, very, very cool.
